Karen Tkaczyk, CT has served in many volunteer roles within ATA, including as ATA secretary. She first trained as a chemist, then set up as a freelance French>English translator and editor in 2005 and leveraged that subject-matter expertise. She is ATA-certified (French>English) and a fellow of the Institute of Translation and Interpreting. In 2021, she took a sales and account management role with MasterWord Services, and that is now her primary focus. She continues to train on topics she explored extensively as a freelancer. Her proofreading and editing courses and workshops have been sought after for several years now.

This has included handling and resolving claims; receiving and responding to inquiries from ATA members; and providing seminars, webinars, and materials to ATA and its members on a variety of topics related to their insurance coverage, liability, and ways to avoid and mitigate claims.

In 2014, she established her own coaching business Take Back My Day to help individuals and organizations solve problems related to workflow and time management. As a certified productivity coach (CPC), she now divides her time between translating and coaching. Her book Complete What You Started (2020) provides a blueprint for carrying big projects across the finish line.

How do you set or raise rates for your translation and interpreting services? Hint: It’s not about what someone else charges!

Knowing how much you need to earn in order to reach your financial goals is a key part of being a freelancer, but many translators and interpreters are not “numbers people” and struggle to set their rates and reach their desired income.
