DESCRIPTION:The ATA Medical Division is excited to announce its second MED Talk of the year! MED Talks are the ATA Medical Division’s content-based presentation series\, free and open to all Medical Division members. \nThis MED Talk will be recorded\, and the recording will be available for one month to all members who register. This event is for members of the ATA Medical Division only. \nThe Medical Translator’s Dictionary: What It No Longer Is and What It Could Become\nWith the arrival of the internet and the development of digital databases\, the lexicography industry was transformed: dictionaries—essential tools for every translator—ceased to be unwieldy tomes and became easily accessible works in the cloud\, easily editable\, expandable\, and universally available. And so\, it remained for over a decade. However\, with the popularization of generative artificial intelligence\, the landscape has shifted once again\, as the possibilities for retrieving and reusing information have multiplied—especially in the field of translation. \nWhat new paths are opening up in terms of services for translators and other language professionals? What considerations must be taken into account in the development and adaptation of tools for documentation\, translation\, post-editing\, and the revision of translated texts? In relation to these activities\, what is a dictionary today—a list of terms\, a database\, or rather a dynamic\, adaptable service available in many forms? \nIn this presentation\, I attempt to address these questions from the perspective of Cosnautas\, a publishing house specializing in resources for medical translators\, using primarily the case of Fernando Navarro’s Libro Rojo. \nAbout the Speaker\nJosé Antonio de la Riva Fort is a founding partner and director of Cosnautas\, a publishing house specializing in medical terminology and dictionaries for medical translators. He has a PhD in Comparative Literature (Universidad Autónoma de Madrid)\, a Master’s degree in Publishing (Universidad de Salamanca) and a major degree in Classics (Salamanca)\, where he came after a few years of liberal arts studies at Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú. His career has two aspects—one as a language professional (proofreader\, editor\, project coordinator\, translator\, writer)\, mainly in the biomedical field\, and the other as a university lecturer (of classical languages\, ancient literature\, rhetoric\, and other related subjects). Mr. de la Riva Fort is interested in the intersections between the humanities and sciences on one side\, and between professional and academic realms on the other.
