DESCRIPTION:This collaborative symposium—uniting the ATA Standards Committee\, FIT North America\, and FIT Latin America—will bring together translation and interpreting professionals from around the world to explore the ethical\, practical\, and standardization challenges posed by the integration of AI.\nParticipants will examine how to uphold safety\, transparency\, and professional integrity in an evolving landscape. With insights from leading experts\, attendees will engage in meaningful discussions and connect with peers dedicated to shaping responsible AI practices in T&I. Don’t miss this essential opportunity to help define the future of ethical and effective AI use in our profession. \nAbout the Presenters\nMohamed Khemakhem has a PhD in natural language processing with significant practical AI experience gained through industry leadership. He previously spearheaded the integration of ontologies and AI into biomedical data analysis across multiple projects. Now chief executive officer of MandaNetwork\, an officially certified training provider\, he develops AI-based knowledge systems and training programs focused on responsible AI adoption. His expertise extends to standardization\, where he has been a key contributor to ISO/TC 37 “Language and Terminology” since 2017. He serves as convenor of the ISO/TC 37/SC 3/WG 6 “Terminology Management and AI.” He also convenes the AFNOR X03A expert group on “Intelligence Artificielle\, Langues\, Langage et Terminologie\,” facilitating cross-domain discussion on AI\, language\, and standards. He also participates in the French NSB’s AI activities\, particularly on ethics and trustworthiness\, contributing to discussions that informed European frameworks such as the AI Act. \nFred Bane is director of data science at TransPerfect in Barcelona\, where he has led a research team focused on machine translation and NLP since 2019. Prior to this\, he worked for 10 years as a Chinese translator before obtaining an MS in computer science from the Georgia Institute of Technology. He also has a master’s degree in ethnology from Nanjing University. His research interests include translation evaluation\, language modeling\, epistemology\, and cross-cultural studies. \nAndy Benzo is a legal translator\, interpreter\, and expert in legal language with over 35 years of experience specializing in English-to-Spanish translation. She has degrees in law and translation from Argentina and has taught legal and business translation at the University of California\, San Diego Extension. A certified translator and long-standing member of ATA since 1999\, Andy currently serves as ATA president-elect and chairs both the Divisions Committee and Governance and Communications Committee. Andy is an international speaker on the intersection of AI\, ethics\, language\, and law. She has presented extensively on legal translation\, civil and common law systems\, and the future of multilingual communication. She also contributes to the development of translation and interpreting standards as a U.S. expert in ISO and an active collaborator with ASTM. \nGiovanna Carriero-Contreras is a leader in the language services industry with over 30 years of experience in interpreting and translation. She is the founder of Cesco Linguistic Services and T360nBeyond\, as well as a visionary in the field\, shaping industry standards through her work with ASTM\, ISO\, ATA\, ALC\, and AAITE\, where she serves as acting chair and chair-elect. Giovanna played a pivotal role in co-authoring The Community Interpreter textbook and training program\, developing the AAITE National Code of Ethics\, and leading key projects in ISO interpreting standards. A recipient of the 2020 Bill Daniels Ethical Leader of the Year award\, she is dedicated to advancing professional ethics\, training\, and language access initiatives in alignment with ongoing efforts to address the evolving impact of AI technologies and legislative changes. \nMartín Chamorro is an English-to-Spanish technical translator from Argentina. He participates as an organizer and speaker in professional conferences for translators and interpreters. He has a technology-oriented profile and experiments a lot with new developments in artificial intelligence (AI). Since 2012\, he has offered face-to-face and virtual classes and lectures on translation software and motivational topics for professionals and students. He is a board member of the Argentine Association of Translators and Interpreters (AATI)\, a member of ATA and CIOL\, and collaborates with different translators’ organizations and universities. \nOrganizers\nOn Behalf of ATA’s Standards Committee\nGabriela Escarrá is a sworn translator (UNLP)\, professor of English language and literature (UNLP)\, and proofreader (Fundación Litterae). She is also an ISO 27001 auditor and holds TAUS certifications in post-editing and transcreation. Gabriela specializes in marketing and corporate communication. She has given conferences and workshops in Asia\, Europe\, the U.S.\, Mexico\, and South America. Gabriela has participated in the adoption and adaptation of standards related to translation\, post-editing\, terminology\, and information security management systems at IRAM (ISO member body in Argentina). She is also a member of ASTM (TC F43). She is chair of ATA’s Standards Committee and administrator of ATA’s Spanish Language Division. Gabriela is co-author of two books\, Mejora continua de la calidad en la traducción and Pequeñas grandes verdades del español (recognized for special interest for social communication by the Legislature of the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires.) \nOn Behalf of FIT North America\nAlan Melby started working on machine translation projects in 1970. By 1979\, he had shifted his focus toward tools for human translators\, provoked by an intellectual crisis regarding the nature of human language. In the 1980s\, he became an ATA-certified French-to-English translator and began serving within the leadership of ATA and the International Federation of Translators (FIT) while continuing to explore philosophy. He is currently chair of FIT North America\, chair of the Standards Committee of FIT Global\, and president of LTAC Global\, a nonprofit focused on serving the language community. His current interests include TBX (the main international standard for representing the content of a termbase)\, MQM (a framework for the analytic evaluation of translation quality)\, and promoting the use of standardized labels on translation output. \nOn Behalf of FIT Latin America\nMary Ann Monteagudo is a renowned expert in legal translation and an international speaker with a sound multidisciplinary background. She has a PhD in translation studies and a master’s degree in institutional translation from the University of Alicante\, as well as a master’s degree in business innovation from the Polytechnic University of Valencia. She has a bachelor’s degree in translation and interpreting from the Universidad Femenina del Sagrado Corazón and is a sworn translator in English\, French\, and Portuguese\, accredited by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Peru. She also has a degree in law from the Universidad San Martín de Porres. She has postgraduate studies in terminology\, legal interpreting\, legal expertise\, commercial law\, and administrative law. She teaches the legal translation course at the Universidad Peruana de Ciencias Aplicadas and has more than 30 years of experience as a translator and interpreter specializing in the legal field. She is chair of the Regional Centre Latin America of the International Federation of Translators (FIT LatAm) and vice president of Colegio de Traductores del Perú (CTP). She was president of CTP in 2010-2012 and 2022-2025. She is a member of ATA and the Peruvian Association of Terminology (where she has been secretary)\, and chaired the Ibero-American Terminology Network (RITerm) from 2021 to 2023. She is co-author of two fundamental publications—Diccionario socioprofesional del traductor and Diccionario para profesionales de la Traducción—as well as several scientific articles and book chapters in the field of translation and legal terminology.

DESCRIPTION:One of the greatest challenges in working with handwritten German-language documents produced before the 20th century is the script in which they were written\, known as Kurrent. In this webinar\, we will begin with an overview of the history of this form of German handwriting\, with a focus on how it was taught and used in the 18th and 19th centuries in Europe and America. We will examine several examples of Kurrentschrift that German translators often work with today\, including personal documents (letters and diaries) and vital records. We will wrap up with information on resources for translators and others who are interested in becoming proficient in Kurrentschrift. \nAttendance is limited to 100 participants. \nMark L. Louden\, Ph.D.\, is the Alfred L. Shoemaker\, J. William Frey\, and Don Yoder Professor of Germanic Linguistics and the Director of the Max Kade Institute for German American Studies at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. Most of his research and public outreach centers on German-related language varieties in North America\, especially Pennsylvania Dutch.

She began her career as an interpreter and translator at the University of Veracruz in Mexico\, where she also majored in Pedagogy. Being bilingual in English and Spanish lead her to language teaching and then to translation and interpreting. She has done conference interpreting\, as well as interpreting for the media and government officials in Mexico. Currently\, she serves as president of MATI (Midwest Association of Interpreters and Translators) and writes for The Observer\, a blog published by the National Association of Judiciary Interpreters and Translators. When she’s not interpreting\, she likes to learn about new subjects\, something she considers pivotal to becoming a more proficient language access professional. Some of her interests include urban gardening\, cooking\, and ancestry research. \nHelen Eby is an ATA-certified translator (English>Spanish and Spanish>English). She is also a Spanish state-certified (Oregon and Washington) court interpreter and a medical interpreter certified by the Oregon Health Authority. One of her major interests is guiding translators and interpreters who are just entering the profession. This commitment to helping newcomers prompted her to co-found The Savvy Newcomer\, a blog that is now recognized as a go-to resource for launching a career in translation and interpreting. Her background as a teacher of English and Spanish also led to her involvement with ¡Al rescate del español!\, a team effort to produce a layman’s guide to good Spanish writing skills for the United States. In 2014\, she was the technical contact for the ASTM Standard Guide for Quality Assurance in Translation (F2575-14). She also volunteers on the Oregon Council on Health Care Interpreters.
