Hi Molly, thanks so much for volunteering! My two tips are to a) be open to anything – your Newbie may have years more experience than you and just happen to be attending the conference for the first time, or they may be a college student who’s just curious about the field and has a million questions about how to break into the field. You never know! and b) Plan to meet up with your Newbie as early as possible so it doesn’t get pushed aside in the rush of all the other things you want to do at the conference. If you don’t swap contact info and set a specific time and place to meet while you’re at the Newbies session on Wednesday, it’s likely that it won’t happen so plan early.

Hi Jamie! I attended Buddies Welcome Newbies last year as a newbie, and it was a huge help for me to feel more comfortable wandering through my first conference. This year I’ll be volunteering as a buddy, do you have any tips for first-time buddies?
