Thanks for your comment and I’m glad that you agree with the need to change pricing. As to your last point, I think that it actually will be the translation agencies who will drive that change, because it’s exactly them who will want to also benefit from otherwise immeasurable improvements in our translation processes.

When I started in the business, I already wondered why we had to bill per word in stead of per hour. The answer: when the client can’t see you work, the number of words is the only thing he can check. As soon as I did projects on site, clients immediately payed per hour. In my view, it is this need for control that leads clients to ask for a per word rate, for translation, but also often for editing.
So, is it the translator’s choice to charge per word? With direct clients, maybe, but with translation agencies, it’s the agency that dictates how it likes to be invoiced.
