Secondary schools in all European Union (EU) countries can now start enrolling for Juvenes Translatores, the European Commission鈥檚 annual translation contest.
Participants can translate between any two of the EU鈥檚 24 official languages (i.e., 552 possible language combinations). In last year鈥檚 contest, students used 150 different combinations. This year, the topic of the texts that young students are asked to translate is 鈥淟et鈥檚 get on track鈥攖owards a greener future.鈥
鈥淭he aim of the contest is to inspire young people to get interested in a career as translators and, in general, to promote language learning,鈥 said EU Commissioner for Budget and Administration Johannes Hahn. 鈥淭he topic is in line with one of the EU鈥檚 most important political priorities鈥攖he European Green Deal鈥攚hich is of particular interest to young people.鈥
鈥淚n addition to tackling this interesting subject, the aim of the competition is to bring together young people from different countries with a love for languages, and to encourage them and help them overcome barriers between people and cultures,鈥 Hahn said. 鈥淭he ability to communicate with and understand one another, regardless of differences, is essential for the EU to flourish.鈥
